Work With Us
Sun Company of Canada, a subsidiary of Sun Oil, was the name under which Suncor was first created in Montreal in 1919. Sun integrated its holdings in Great Canadian Oil Sands, conventional oil and gas, and its refining and retailing operations in Canada to become Suncor in 1979. The Ontario government acquired a 25% stake in the business in 1981; it sold those shares in 1993. Sun Oil also divested its stock in the business in 1995, while Suncor continued to use the Sunoco retail name in Canada. The Company had become a stand-alone, widely-held public company with these two divestitures.
The Sun Oil Company Limited and Great Canadian Oil Sands Limited, two of Sun Oil‘s Canadian conventional and heavy oil subsidiaries, were merged to form Suncor in 1979. Up until 2010, Suncor promoted goods and services to retail customers in Ontario through a downstream network of 780 company-owned and 700 customer-operated retail and Diesel fuel locations, predominantly in Ontario under the Sunoco name. 2009 saw Suncor acquire the previous Crown corporation Petro-Canada, which took the place of the Sunoco brand in all of its existing stores. Additionally, Suncor advertises its products through a network of Colorado-based stores under the Shell and ExxonMobil brands.
