About Us
A significant South Korean construction company is Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co. Ltd. The Civil Works organization was a significant part of the Group when it was established by Chung Ju-yung in 1947. In 1999, Construction and Engineering amalgamated. In the 1970s and 1980s, Hyundai Building was a significant factor in the importation of Korean workers to the Middle East to work on construction projects. The construction of a shipyard for the Iranian Navy close to Bandar-e Abbas was the first contract signed in the area in the decade that followed 1975. The firm was their biggest employer, sending 800,000 Koreans to work in Saudi Arabia and another 25,000 to Iran.
The Company was divided into various organizations between 2001 and 2006 under the administration of creditors, with Korea Exchange Bank as the major creditor. Merchant Marine, the de facto holding company of the Group, has as of March 2007 had HDEC as its largest stakeholder. HDEC is being pursued by both Group and Hyundai Motor Group, a separate division of Group.
